Duty-free import of beef into the EAEU will be extended until 2024

The quota for duty-free import of beef into the EAEU countries was set at 100 thousand tons for 2023, and the same volume is planned to be maintained for 2024 . As before, frozen cattle MEAT will fall under the quota , and the cheaper parts of cattle carcasses that are used for processing are usually imported in this way . it is profitable to import imported beef  to RUSSIA even with a high DOLLAR exchange rate, reports Rossiyskaya Gazeta with reference to the National Union of Meat Processors (NUM). The union’s commentary states that due to the rise in the dollar exchange rate, prices for beef produced in Russia are also rising, since the dollar exchange rate affects the cost of foreign premixes, medicines, veterinary preparations and other goods imported by livestock farmers. At the same time, imported beef may be cheaper, since inexpensive parts of carcasses will be imported. In addition, processors choose suppliers from countries where beef prices are lower compared to the overall market.

In 2023, beef was not imported for a long time due to problems in paperwork, the expert noted, but processors expect that the quota will be completely used up by the end of the year. Subject to the extension of the duty-free import quota for next year, prices for processed beef products on the domestic market will stabilize, experts say.

At the same time, exports of domestic beef in 2023 remain insignificant and have even decreased compared to last year, experts noted. This is primarily due to serious competition in the world market, despite the fact that demand is growing mainly for cheaper poultry meat .
