October 1st,Vitebsk . In the Braslav District, a drunk driver without a license got behind the wheel of a car and struck an elderly cyclist in the oncoming lane, resulting in two fatalities. This was reported to a BelTA correspondent by the Investigative Committee for the Vitebsk Region.
Investigative Committee officers for the Vitebsk Region established that on the evening of May 21, a 28-year-old man was driving a Mazda. While driving along Sovkhoznaya Street in the village of Vidzy-Lovchinskiye, he crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 63-year-old cyclist. He then returned to his lane and pulled over, where the car crashed into a concrete barrier. The car overturned, and the 23-year-old passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene from his injuries.
The driver was unlicensed and had previously been cited for unlicensed driving in December 2024 . On the day of the accident, the man had been driving repeatedly and occasionally drinking. After learning that his friend had been pulled over for drunk driving, the man went to "support" his friend and share his own bitter experience. The Mazda driver ran out of ALCOHOL

An automotive technical examination determined that, had the driver followed traffic rules, he could have stopped in time upon seeing the cyclist and also avoided a collision with the concrete barrier. The collected characterizing material showed that the person at fault in the accident was unemployed and had previously been convicted of hooliganism and car theft.
