Purulent mastitis of cattle

Among the various types of mastitis in cows, the purulent form is among the most dangerous. The disease strikesudder and is inflammatory in nature. In the absence of timely and high-quality treatment, a cow's MILK production can significantly decrease. In some cases, its complete loss is possible.

Causes of purulent mastitis in cows

The cause of the disease is pathogenic microorganisms (mainly streptococci and staphylococci) that penetrate the breast tissue through cracks and wounds in the nipples. Most often, the disease affects 1–2 quarters of the udder.

Risk factors include:

· improper care of the udder;

· violations of sanitary order in places of detention;

· high humidity, low temperature in the barn;

· irrational feeding.

Under such conditions , the animal’s immunity drops, and the body is most susceptible to harmful bacteria that penetrate the mammary glands through mechanical damage to the nipples. The most common causes are violation of milking technique (incomplete emptying of the mammary gland, injuries due to improper operation of the milking machine), damage to the udder from hard, sharp objects during grazing.

Symptoms

The disease has 3 forms.

1.  Purulent-catarrhal . Pus forms in the ducts and alveoli. The affected quarter of the udder swells, becomes hot, painful, and looks larger than the others. Lymph nodes enlarge. The milk is bitter, watery, with impurities, its volume sharply decreases to a minimum. The cow is lethargic and refuses food.

2.  Abscess . The milk passages become clogged with purulent masses. The signs are the same as for the purulent-catarrhal form, but the pain is stronger, so cows usually lame on one of their hind legs. Abscesses and scars appear on the udder.

3.  Phlegmon . Inflammation develops under the skin and is characterized by a specific putrefactive odor. The skin swells significantly and becomes tense. Abscesses often appear.

The spread of the disease usually passes within a few days, and the first signs are noticeable already on the first day.

Treatment of purulent mastitis in cows

" Mastomycin ". Anti-mastitis gel, which contains gentamicin , clindamycin and lidocaine. The medicine is available ready for use - in disposable 10 ml syringes with a cannula. Acts as a local anesthetic, relieving pain , and actively destroys all common types of pathogenic microflora. Treatment consists of injecting the contents of a syringe into the affected cistern. Depending on the condition of the animal, the procedure is repeated 2–6 times with an interval of 12 hours until the symptoms disappear. After this, milk can be used on the 4th day.

" Septogel syringe ". Gel based on iodopovidone (active iodine 0.65%), does not contain hormones and is perfectly combined with modern antibiotics for animals. Disinfects and successfully fights harmful bacteria that cause mastitis. Absolutely safe for tissues and mucous membranes due to the gradual and uniform release of elemental iodine. The drug is injected into the tanks up to 10 times every 12 hours until the symptoms disappear. Milk can be used for food purposes after complete recovery.
