28% of the total exported last year was already sent to CHINA in the first quarter of 2021.
Between January and March, EU pork exports to China increased by 26.2%, reaching 954,553 tons. This represents more than 28% of the total volume shipped to China last year (3,341,667 tons). In value terms, the growth was + 21%.
Taiwan (99%) also saw strong growth in exports, followed by Congo (92%), Hong Kong (83.9%) and Angola (70.5%).
In the first quarter of the year, total pork exports outside the EU market, excluding the UK, reached 1,602,209 tonnes, up 30.1% in volume and 16.6% in value compared to the same period last year.
Japan recorded the largest drop in pork exports at 77,821 tons, down 23% from the first quarter of 2020.
At the same time, EU pork imports grew by 10.6% in volume (11,278 tons) and by 7.7% in value (€21.3 million). Switzerland was the main supplier of pork to the EU single market, with 5,160 tons of MEAT shipped in the first quarter of this year.
