Drought in Mexico: Impact on Livestock Sector

Production Drop

Livestock production in Durango has dropped by almost 30%, according to the latest data. This decline affects 11 associations operating in areas such as Guanasevi, San Bernardo and Santa Maria del Oro. Local farmers, who traditionally relied on pastures and reservoirs to feed their livestock, are in a difficult situation. Dams that used to provide the necessary water are now unable to cope with the growing needs of livestock due to the prolonged drought.

Premature sale of livestock

Due to the lack of feed and water, producers are forced to sell their livestock early. This not only leads to a decrease in livestock, but also has a negative impact on EXPORT supplies. Mexico is known for its cattle exports , and the reduction in supply could cause MEAT prices to rise on both domestic and international markets.

Precautionary measures

The livestock farmers’ union in Durango has already called on its members to take precautionary measures. Recommendations include purchasing grazing reserves to help in difficult times, as well as animal HEALTH testing and ear tagging, which is necessary for export. These steps will help minimize losses and maintain the health of the herd, which is especially important in the current drought.

Economic impact

Although the exact economic losses from the drought have not yet been calculated, experts predict that they will be significant. Given that the livestock sector is one of the key sectors for the region’s economy, a decrease in production could lead to massive layoffs and a deterioration in the living standards of local people. Farmers who are already experiencing difficulties may face even greater problems in the future if climate conditions do not change.

The drought in Mexico is not just a natural phenomenon, it is a serious challenge for the livestock sector that requires immediate and effective action. It is important that both local and national authorities work to develop climate change adaptation strategies to support farmers and ensure the sustainable development of livestock in the country. The situation in Durango is a signal of the need for greater attention to resources and climate conditions that directly affect people's lives and the economy.
