FARMER. RU continues to publish videos from the AgroExpedition “Agriculture of Kazakhstan”. In this issue we will talk with Baurzhan Kenesbekovich Ospanov about the results of recent work in horse breeding, as well as the prospects for the development of this area.
“Fruitful cooperation with leading scientific institutes of Kazakhstan has made it possible to achieve significant results in the development of horse breeding,” says famous Kazakh businessman and philanthropist Baurzhan Ospanov.
The beginning of the journey was not easy. With difficulty, the first herds of horses of the Zhab breed were collected from all corners of Kazakhstan. The average weight of the first foals produced on the farm, at seven months of age, was only 144 kg, and now the weight exceeds 200 kg. Such results were achieved in just seven years, largely thanks to science.
The breeding stock of the enterprise consists of mares of the Toad breed, stallions of the Toad breed, Novoaltayskaya, and Soviet heavy draft. Horses give a good gain in live weight, while maintaining fertility, good immunity and high adaptive qualities. And this is subject to year-round keeping of horses on pastures in a sharply continental climate.
The Alakol Asyl Zhylkysy enterprise does not stop there. Tasks are set to preserve the taste and improve the marbling of MEAT. These requests are dictated by economic trends in the market. The goal is to satisfy the demand of a wide range of countries, which will subsequently lead to an increase in the profitability of the enterprise.
One of the tasks is to create a new breed of horse that meets all the necessary parameters, including economic ones. Of course, this will take more than one decade.
The best offspring remain on the farm to increase the livestock. Next come horses for breeding sales (the most marginal direction), sales to private individuals (for work, riding, obtaining kumys, etc.). Horses that are not suitable for breeding for one reason or another are sent for meat .
Horses constantly migrate throughout the year, consuming a large amount of varied food.
Horse breeding is characterized by low maintenance costs, which is especially typical for indigenous breeds in Kazakhstan. An important role is played by strict culling, which allows you to select only the best representatives of the breed, distinguished by their HEALTH and adaptive qualities. This leads to a significant reduction in mortality and forced slaughter.
Horse breeding in Kazakhstan has great potential. Thanks to a competent approach and the implementation of scientific developments, this industry can become one of the most successful in the country.
