Lamb is one of the most promising EXPORT products for Russian producers, says Igor Abakumov, an expert in the field of agriculture. Lamb prices in RUSSIA have increased by 30-40% over the past year, according to Rosstat. This price increase can be observed both for steamed, cooled or chilled lamb, and for frozen.
it is interesting to note that an increase in the number of sheep in Russia is observed only in two regions: Karachay-Cherkessia and Dagestan. In the early 90s of the last century, the cattle breeding industry associated with the production of sheep wool received a strong blow from the refusal of the Ministry of Defense to purchase this material and switch to other fabrics when sewing military uniforms.
However, despite these obstacles, the expert emphasizes that there are large lamb producers in Russia. However, lamb is a relatively niche product in the market, accounting for only about 2% of total turnover. This limits the development of the industry.
One of the ways to stimulate the development of the industry is the development of the export market. Lamb is in demand in Iran, the UAE and other Muslim countries. Lamb is also a valuable and dietary product from which high-quality shelf-stable products can be obtained. This makes it attractive for the needs of the defense department and expanding exports.
Igor Abakumov notes that if lamb production becomes profitable for peasants, they will quickly respond to growing demand. It is important to consider that we do not have a tradition of consuming this MEAT and therefore it is important to promote its benefits and develop the market both domestically and internationally.
