PIONERPRODUKT.by continues publishing videos from the AgroExpedition "Agriculture of Kazakhstan." In this video, we'll demonstrate the setup of a cattle splitting shed, observe how calves are weaned, and get a glimpse into the living conditions of the employees of one of the leading Aberdeen Angus breeding farms—Arkharly-Maybuyrek LLC in the Zhetysu region of Kazakhstan. According
to Askar, the heart of any livestock farm isn't the accounting department, the director's office, or the feed stock, but the splitting shed. It's where all important procedures for the animals are performed: veterinary procedures, vaccinations , rectal examinations, weaning, and grading. Typically, about 500 HEAD of cattle pass through the splitting shed daily .
At the time of filming, a herd of Aberdeen Angus cows with calves was in the splitting shed. Askar hopes that the farm will be able to get 7-8 calvings from each cow. Although cows can calve for 10 years or more, it's unprofitable for the business to produce more calves per cow.
The cattle shed is equipped with a veterinary recording station, which allows for all animal procedures. Each animal, in addition to a tag, has a microchip that records all necessary information: pedigree, physiological indicators, and veterinary procedures.
According to Askar, for every 100 sows, there are approximately 80 calves at weaning, although the calf yield at birth is 87%. Natural mortality occurs due to wolves, snakes, and other predators found in the area. Aberdeen Angus cows, however, don't require any obstetric assistance; calving occurs without human assistance, as calves are born with a small head and weigh up to 25 kilograms.
At weaning, calves are sorted by sex. Heifers are placed in one pen, and bulls in another. After this, they are sent to various pastures for further rearing.
Once, this site was nothing but sand. The entire infrastructure of the base was built from scratch by the agricultural division of the Zhersu corporation.
At the time of filming, the base consisted of an equipped cattle shed and two large outbuildings used for feed storage, spare parts storage, and parking of equipment and fuel. In addition, there is a livestock breeders' house, a machine operators' house, and a bathhouse . Veterinarians and other specialists who come from the city also live on the base.
The Arkharly-Maybuyrek enterprise permanently employs 10 people (five livestock breeders and five machine operators), tending to 10,000 head of Aberdeen Angus cattle. Since the pastures are fenced with electric fences, one livestock breeder can handle 2,000 head of cattle.
Ten months a year, the cattle are kept on rotational pastures, with two winter months dedicated to stall-fed pastures. Stall-fed pastures are smaller and equipped with water troughs and large mounds of manure that serve as windbreaks. But we'll explore that in a future episode.
