In the Moscow region, the forage procurement campaign for the upcoming winter stall season is ongoing.
Farmers' primary focus has now shifted from procurement to preservation. Losses in nutritional value due to improper storage can reach 30-40%. Silage is stored in sealed bags or trenches under special film to prevent air from entering and initiate the fermentation process. Silage is also securely covered in trenches with multi-layer film and often weighed down with special sandbags to create an ideal anaerobic environment. Hay is stored in warehouses or under shelters to protect it from precipitation and weathering.
According to the Moscow Region Ministry of Agriculture and Food, 803,300 tons of roughage (hay, haylage) and 602,700 tons of succulent feed (silage, root crops) have been harvested to date, amounting to 28.0 centners of feed units, or 90% of the planned 31 centners of feed units. The average requirement per HEAD of cattle for the entire winter period is 22-24 centners of feed units. This volume is sufficient for the successful wintering of the entire Moscow Region herd.
Meanwhile, livestock complexes are actively preparing for winter: ventilation and heating systems are being checked, buildings are being insulated, and bedding is being prepared for the cattle. The campaign is scheduled to conclude in November.
