On October 3, 2025, an international conference dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Academician Rashit Kazikhanovich Kazikhan, a distinguished scientist who dedicated his life to sheep farming in Kazakhstan, was held in Astana.
Following the ceremony, the participants traveled to the Suleimenov family farm in Akmola Oblast.
The Suleimenov farm was started by five brothers during the difficult 1990s, and a key moment was the selection and purchase of two purebred rams from Temirkhan Gappasuly, the DIRECTOR of Bastau LLC. These two sires, "Metis" and "Shaman," laid the foundation for the breeding operation, and the elder blessed the young breeders to continue their ancestors' work.
The farm currently has approximately 10,000 sheep, which graze year-round in the open steppe. Young sheep, when weaned at 4–4.5 months, reach 58–60 kg, and the average live weight of adult sheep is around 98–100 kg, with the best specimens reaching 110–115 kg.
A demonstration of Edilbaevskaya pedigree sheep was conducted by Zhanat Toleubekovich Kasenov, PhD in agricultural sciences, breeder, and deputy director for selection and breeding at the Suleimenov farm. Over the course of an hour, he presented nine lines by age and sex group. Particular attention was paid to the elongated-body sheep, which have 14 pairs of ribs instead of 13, which increases MEAT production.
The show concluded with the presentation of this year's young sheep and lambs. They demonstrated the consistent inheritance of traits—the result of many years of work by Kazakhstani breeders. This demonstration was a clear demonstration that tradition, science, and practice in Kazakhstan are developing together, creating new opportunities for modern sheep farming.
