Moldovan Agricultural Trends in 2024

Problems with crop production

The most noticeable reduction is observed in crop production. According to preliminary estimates, the gross harvest of grain and leguminous crops (excluding corn) amounted to about 1 million 443 thousand tons, which is 22% less than in the same period last year. Crops such as wheat and barley were particularly hard hit: the wheat harvest amounted to about 1 million 194 thousand tons, which is 23% lower than in 2023, and barley - 199 thousand tons, which is also 18% less. The

decrease in the yield of major agricultural crops is due to several factors. Firstly, unfavorable climatic conditions, including droughts and heavy rains, had a negative impact on the growth and development of plants. Secondly, insufficient financing and a lack of modern technologies in the agricultural sector also contributed to a decrease in productivity.

Positive dynamics in livestock production

Despite the difficulties in crop production, the livestock sector is showing positive results. Live weight production of animals in farms of all categories increased by 19.2% compared to the same period in 2023. This is due to the growing demand for MEAT and dairy products both in the domestic and foreign markets. Farmers began to invest more actively in livestock breeding, which also contributed to the increase in production volumes.

Influence of external factors

We should not forget about the external factors affecting Moldovan agriculture . Changes in international trade, fluctuations in prices for agricultural products, as well as economic instability in the region can have a significant impact on the performance of the agricultural sector. In the context of globalization, local producers face competition from countries with more developed agricultural technologies. Moldovan

agriculture continues to be influenced by both internal and external factors. The decline in crop production raises serious concerns, while growth in the livestock sector gives hope for a possible recovery. In order to ensure sustainable development of the agricultural sector, it is necessary to introduce modern technologies, improve infrastructure and support farmers from the state. Otherwise, Moldova risks facing further challenges in ensuring food security and sustainable rural development.
