In the Year of Ecology in Yamal, they study the state of whitefish species

The second stage of a large-scale research project to study the state of whitefish species is underway in Yamal.
The project is organized by the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Government, and the executor is two leading scientific institutes of RUSSIA. At this stage, the scientists of the Tyumen branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography were tasked to investigate the sor system of the Lower Ob in the Ural and Shuryshkar regions. The results of the work will form the basis of recommendations for the restoration and conservation of natural stocks of whitefish species, as well as the organization of fishing and the refinement of the list of selective fishing gear.
During the expedition, the scientists studied large sor systems located in the interfluve of the Malaya and Bolshaya Ob Rivers in the Aksarka, Yambura, Beloyarsk and Kharsaim regions. Now scientists have begun echolocation surveys on the Synya River and the adjacent sor system near the village of Muzhi. This will make it possible to estimate the biomass and spatial distribution of fish in water bodies.
“Special equipment writes the echolocation track of each fish, its size and parameters. In front of the boat there is an additional locator - a domestic development that also allows you to analyze the upper water column. All these devices together and carry out fish accounting.
Pavel Kochetkov Deputy HEAD of the Fishery Ecology Laboratory of the Tyumen Branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography.
Recall that in the Year of Ecology, declared in Yamal by Governor Dmitry Artyukhov, the regional government initiated a study of the state of whitefish species in Yamal. The goal is to determine the prospects for the conservation, restoration and rational development of valuable aquatic biological resources.
The first stage of research was carried out this spring. Employees of the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences analyzed the hatching of juvenile whitefish species in the spawning tributaries of the Lower Ob and Taz for further assessment of the quality of natural reproduction. In parallel with them, specialists from the Tyumen branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography in the Ob Bay of the Kara Sea and spawning tributaries of the Ob and Taz rivers collected ichthyological material necessary to assess the distribution of aquatic biological resources and wintering areas of fish accumulations. The data obtained are now being processed in the laboratories of both scientific institutions.
A comprehensive assessment of the results of all stages of the project by scientists from the two institutes will be carried out this autumn. Based on the results of the work, the researchers will provide data on the actual state and structure of stocks of commercial fish species. This will make it possible in the future to rationally distribute the volume of catch by type of fishery, quickly organize fish protection measures, and expand the release sites for juvenile muksun and whitefish.
