A drunk driver fled the scene of a fatal accident in Minsk. The Investigative Committee has released details of the case.

Photo by the Investigative Committee, October 6, MINSK . Investigators from the Investigative Committee for the city of Minsk have established the circumstances of a traffic accident in which one person sustained serious injuries and a second died. The Investigative Committee told BELTA.

According to investigators, on the night of May 5, a 43-year-old man was in a state ofA drunk driver was driving an Audi. His 41-year-old friend was traveling with him. Driving along Moscow's Lenin Street, the driver ignored a red light and entered an intersection where he collided with a Volkswagen taxi. As a result of the accident, the car left the roadway and crashed into a light pole. Realizing the gravity of his actions, the driver abandoned his car and fled the scene. He failed to report the incident to law enforcement or render assistance to his passenger or the 52-year-old taxi driver.

The passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered serious injuries from the impact and died in the hospital. The taxi driver also suffered serious injuries. Only 24 hours later did the man report to the police station and confess to the crime. 

it was established that the driver was significantly exceeding the speed limit—over 130 km/h. During questioning, he denied being intoxicated, but his account was refuted by the evidence collected. The identity of the person responsible for the accident was also investigated: he had previously been convicted of hooliganism and drug trafficking, and had been repeatedly held administratively liable for traffic violations.

Based on the investigation, the Audi driver's actions were classified under Part 4 of Article 317 (violation of traffic rules by a person operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resulting through negligence in the death of a person and causing serious bodily injury) and Part 3 of Article 159 (deliberate abandonment of another person, committed by a person who negligently placed the victims in a dangerous condition) of the Criminal Code. With the prosecutor's approval , he was remanded in custody.
