Russia ranked 146th out of 167 in the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU - analytical division of The Economist) global democracy index, calculated at the end of 2022. She scored 2.28 points out of 10 and dropped 22 positions compared to the previous rating.

First of all, the decrease, according to the authors of the rating, was caused by the start of the military operation in Ukraine and the related changes in legislation - the responsibility for discrediting the army and strengthening control over the media.

In its ranking, The Economist divided countries into four categories:

1. Full-fledged democracies - this group includes 24 states. In the top five - Norway (9.81 points), New Zealand, Iceland, Sweden, Finland. In 24th place is SOUTH KOREA.

Analysts estimate that about 45.3% of the world's population lives in democracies of varying degrees of stability; 36.9% - in authoritarian states. In general, The Economist recorded that the global democracy index rose by 0.01, to 5.29 points out of 10. Experts attribute its slow pace to stagnation due to covid restrictions that affected the personal freedoms of citizens.

The Democracy Index was formed in 2006 and has been updated annually since then. When compiling it, indicators are taken into account in such areas as elections and pluralism, civil liberties, government performance, political involvement of the population and political culture.
