USA: Week 21 Pig Market Review 2021

As of May 28, 2021, the USDA reports that the average cost of pork products in the US market has increased by $0.22. Over the past week, there was a decline in prices only for ham (-2.94$) and picnic (-2.00$).

Pig carcass weight trades closed last Friday at $1.2086 US/lb ($2.66 US/kg). For the first time in several years, the figure of $1.20 US was exceeded, this is a real reflection of the high demand for pork both in the domestic and foreign markets. In addition, July slaughter hog futures closed Friday at $1.165 US/lb ($2.57 US/kg), a new high for futures contracts.

With the national average price for 53-54% lean slaughter pigs at $1.1168 US/lb ($2.46 US/kg), it is not hard to believe that the price of slaughter pigs will continue to rise in the coming weeks. its growth due to the seasonal decline in the supply of pigs and lower selling weight, which will further reduce the supply of pork.

Quite severe outbreaks of PRRS and PED appear to still be ongoing. It appears that some of the PRRS cases are quite devastating as they result in sow deaths, abortions and a general decline in pig herd survivability.

Over the past week, 58,663 sows have been sent to slaughter in the United States. This level indicates that there is now little to no elimination of breeding stock.
