This is the final population expansion activity for this season. The sterlet, brought from the Kostroma region, was released near the village of Turovets, Mezhdurechensky district. The location was chosen by specialists from the Vologda branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography. The process was controlled by a commission formed by the North-West Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Fisheries. Such parameters as quality, condition and quantity of released fish were recorded.
Over the past 23 years, more than 1.5 million juvenile sterlet have been released into the Sukhona River. Scientific research conducted in 2022 confirms the success of the ongoing activities. The length of the individuals that replenished the water area in previous years has already reached more than 50 cm and a weight of more than 1 kg. The survival rate of sterlet is higher than standard indicators.
“In 2023, the Department of Agriculture and Food signed a contract for the provision of services for a comprehensive environmental survey of the Sukhona River in the Veliky Ustyug, Nyuksensky, Totemsky and Mezhdurechensky districts. Our goal is to assign this location the status of a specially protected natural area of regional significance of the state biological (zoological) reserve “Sterlet Spawning Grounds,” said Sergei Poromonov, HEAD of the Department of Agriculture and Food Resources of the region. “This is necessary to preserve the genetic fund of aquatic biological resources, create favorable conditions for the reproduction of sterlet and ensure its sustainable existence.”
