Russian officials, journalists, companies and banks were included in the sanctions lists of Western countries after the start of Russia's military operation in Ukraine, which was condemned by representatives of 141 countries in the UN General Assembly.

On June 27, the Canadian government announced sanctions against six individuals and 46 entities associated with the Russian defense sector, against "state-sponsored disinformation and propaganda agencies and organizations controlled by high-ranking Russian government officials."

The Russian authorities have repeatedly called the sanctions illegal. In March, the Foreign Ministry banned more than 300 Canadian citizens from entering Russia, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly and National Defense Minister Anita Anand. The list was later expanded.
