EU Ambassador to RUSSIA Markus Ederer was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, June 21, because of the decision of the Lithuanian authorities to limit the transit of sanctioned goods to the Kaliningrad region, the diplomat is going to set conditions. This was announced by the Governor of the Kaliningrad region Anton Alikhanov on the air of the Antonymy program on RT.

“Here, of course, is a situation that can be resolved through diplomacy. As far as I know, tomorrow Markus Ederer, the EU ambassador to Russia, will be summoned to the Foreign Ministry, to Smolenka, and he will be given the appropriate conditions,” Alikhanov said. The governor did not specify what specific conditions he was talking about.

He expressed hope that the ambassador would assist in resolving the situation, as he had been to Kaliningrad and knew the "specifics" of the region.

Earlier, the Lithuanian authorities banned the passage of transit trains with goods that fell under European sanctions by rail. The decision came into force on June 18. The Lithuanian Railway Service informed the regional railway about this.

Alikhanov then said that the Lithuanian Railway Service had put the region "in front of a fact." According to him, the restrictions affected "from 20 to 40% of the range", including cement, metals, building materials and other goods important for construction and production.

The HEAD of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, Gabrielius Lansbergis, in response, said that the decision was made not by Vilnius, but by the European Union, since it was he who imposed sanctions against Russia. The transit was banned after "consultation with the European Commission and in accordance with its directives," LRT radio reported. At the same time, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry noted that the country did not impose unilateral restrictions, and only complies with sanctions. They added that the transit of goods that did not fall under them continues.

The European Union banned the import of iron and steel products, as well as cement, coal, timber and other goods from Russia into its territory back in the spring.
