Three republics of the North Caucasus entered the top ten regions of the Russian Federation with the lowest total emissions of air pollutants in 2021. This is stated in the study of the analytical service of the audit and consulting network FinExpertiza

In particular, this list includes Karachay-Cherkessia (23.8 thousand tons), Kabardino-Balkaria (25.7 thousand tons) and Ingushetia (26.2 thousand tons). Each of these regions accounts for about 0.1% or less of all emissions in the country.

In terms of absolute indicators of emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere, the Krasnoyarsk Territory is the leader (in 2021, 2.6 million tons of harmful substances were emitted into the air in the region, which is 11.7% of all emissions in the country), as well as the Kemerovo Region (1.7 million tons, or 7.5%) and the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (1.3 million tons, or 5.8%).

According to the study, in general, in 2021, the total volume of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere increased by 0.3% compared to the previous 2020, from 22.2 to 22.3 million tons. About 77% of all emissions come from businesses and 23% from transport.

“Despite the relatively small increase in the total mass of emissions in the country as a whole, in a number of regions the indicator increased quite significantly,” experts say. Thus, the leaders of the anti-rating were Yakutia (cumulative emissions from enterprises and transport increased in the region by 35%), the Volgograd Region (+16.6%) and the Ryazan Region (+14.8%).

The largest relative reduction in polluting emissions was recorded in the Voronezh region (decreased by 29.2%), Murmansk (-28.9%) and Tver (-24.6%) regions. The same rating included Karachay-Cherkessia (-9.2%).

In turn, the lowest ratio of harmful emissions and the number of people from the regions of the North Caucasus Federal District was recorded in Dagestan (19.8 kg per person), Kabardino-Balkaria (29.6 kg) and North Ossetia (47.7 kg).

“Reducing the harmful impact on the environment is becoming an important economic and social topic for the state and business. This issue is linked to the technological equipment of enterprises, which in turn depends on the financial capabilities of the business and import supplies of equipment. Therefore, in the face of sanctions pressure, there are risks of slowing down the process of greening the Russian industry,” said Aghvan Mikaelyan, member of the board of directors of FinExpertiza.

As RBC Kavkaz reported, two regions of the North Caucasus Federal District entered the top 10 in the Russian Federation with the maximum reduction in emissions from enterprises in 2020.
