USA: 51 Week 2021 Pig Market Review

As of December 24, 2021, the USDA reports , the average cost of pork carcasses in the US market increased by $5.65 over the week. At the same time, over the past week there was an increase in prices for all positions, except for the shoulder blade (-0.3%).

Pig futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange jumped to their highest levels in four weeks on Wednesday, REUTERS reported. Futures came under pressure from the release of monthly data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which showed frozen pork shipments down 8% from the previous month and 3% from last year, said Rich Nelson, chief strategist Allendal.

Pork shipments typically shrink in November, Nelson said, and last month's contraction was at the lower end of a typical decline.

February lean hog futures on the CME edged up 0.925 cents to 83.350 cents a pound and set its highest price since November 26 at 83,600 cents. Traders are awaiting the USDA's quarterly report, which is expected to show that the country's herd is down about 2.9% as of December 1 from a year earlier, a Reuters poll of analysts showed.
