The Spanish government has supported the use of Russian assets to finance Ukraine, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said, according toREUTERS .

"From Spain, we advocate for the maximum possible increase in funding for Ukraine," he stated. The minister also added that Spain supports finding "creative" ways to use Russia's frozen assets.

On August 11, the European Union transferred €1.6 billion in "windfall profits" from the Russian Central Bank's frozen assets to Ukraine , the European Commission announced . This is the third such tranche: the others were transferred in July and April 2025.

In the first half of 2025, Ukraine received €10.1 billion in profit from frozen Russian assets. Funds were effectively transferred monthly: €3 billion in January, €1 billion in March, €3.1 billion in April, and an additional €1 billion each time over the following three months.

Funds are transferred through the macro-financial assistance program as part of a G7 loan, which is repaid with profits from Russian assets. Full asset confiscation has not yet occurred, as Ukraine's allies have not yet reached an agreement on this.

Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that any Western attempts to seize Russian assets will be considered theft and will not go unpunished. Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated that Russia's response to compensation payments made from Russian shares will be harsh.
