Democrats called for tougher sanctions against Russian energy companies

Democrats wrote a letter to Rubio and Bessent asking them to consider tougher sanctions against Russian energy supplies. Trump himself has expressed his willingness to impose sanctions on the condition that all NATO countries follow the US lead.

US Democratic senators have called on President Donald Trump's administration to reimpose targeted sanctions on Russian energy supplies. They sent a corresponding letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, according toREUTERS .

“The failure to enforce even existing sanctions against RUSSIA and the apparent willingness to give CHINA complete freedom to purchase Russian energy fundamentally undermine efforts to end the war and influence the Kremlin’s negotiating position,” said the letter, signed by Senators Elizabeth Warren, Sheldon Whitehouse, Christopher Coons, Chris Van Hollen and four other Democrats.

The senators stated that the sanctions waiver "sends a signal" to other potential buyers that they can purchase Russian LNG without consequences. The Democrats asked for a response to their letter by October 1, including an indication of whether the Trump administration is preparing new sanctions, specifically against the Russian Arctic LNG 2 natural gas and liquefied natural gas project.

As Reuters reports, Trump has repeatedly stated his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin's failure to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine. However, since the beginning of his second term, the Republican has not imposed new sanctions against Russian energy companies. Instead, he has imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports due to purchases of Russian oil .

In September, Trump announced his willingness to impose sweeping sanctions against Russia if all NATO countries followed the US lead and stopped purchasing Russian oil. According to the American president, the alliance's oil purchases from Russia weaken the countries' negotiating position. He also proposed that allies impose tariffs of 50–100% on imports from China , emphasizing that this would significantly impact the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine .The US President clarified that such measures will be lifted after the end of hostilities.

According to The Wall Street Journal, several European countries suspect that Trump set deliberately impossible conditions for imposing sanctions on Russia in order to avoid restrictions. Imposing secondary sanctions on China and India and completely halting purchases of Russian oil is a difficult task for Europe, the publication noted.

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that the Russian economy continues to operate under "a huge number of sanctions" and has developed "a certain immunity" to them. He added that Moscow considers Western sanctions illegal.
