The United States is considering imposing sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague "in the near future" – possibly as early as this week, according toREUTERS, citing sources, notes that Washington has already imposed restrictive measures on individual prosecutors and judges, but not on the body itself, which, among other things, is investigating Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip.
ICC judicial officials have already held emergency internal meetings to discuss the implications of potential sanctions, and meetings have also been held with diplomats from the court's member states.
In August, the US imposed sanctions on four judges. The State Department stated that they were involved in the ICC's work to "investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute" US or Israeli citizens "without the consent of either country."
The US announced sanctions against the ICC in February, and later sanctions were imposed on Attorney General Karim Khan, who issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and members of the Hamas movement.
The United States also entered into agreements with a number of countries obliging them not to extradite Americans to the ICC, otherwise Washington threatened to stop any previously agreed-upon support.
