The new variety of spring oats "Pokrov 2" was developed by Ural and Far Eastern scientists. it was created at the Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Yekaterinburg) and the Federal Scientific Center of Far East Agrobiotechnology named after A.K. Chaika (Primorsky Krai).
The new variety successfully combines large grain size with low filminess, high yield of grain, green mass and dry matter. It has an advantage over the standard variety "Universal-1" in terms of resistance to the main diseases: crown rust and loose smut. The duration of the vegetation period of the mid-season variety "Pokrov 2" is 77-84 days.
"The average grain yield is 4.9 tons per hectare, which is 12% higher than that of the variety "Universal -1". The yield of green mass and dry matter, which are important for feeding cattle , is at the standard level - 30.0 and 9.5 tons per hectare, respectively. The new variety "Pokrov 2" has better indicators for the grain nature, less filminess, which increases its nutritional value for use in food and animal feed. The variety is large-grained, the weight of 1000 grains over the years of study fluctuated between 40-45 grams, "said Valentina Kardashina, one of the authors of the variety "Pokrov 2", senior researcher at the Ural Federal Scientific Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Oats are moisture-loving crops. In relation to heat, oats are a relatively undemanding crop. Due to its characteristics, the variety has shown itself to be excellent in the climatic conditions of the Khabarovsk Territory and the Amur Region.
"Oat selection is carried out in the Krasnoufimsk Selection Center, which cooperates with other research institutes. For ecological study, promising oat lines (numbers) were sent to other regions based on their weather conditions. This is what happened with the Pokrov 2 oats. It was obtained by crossing foreign varieties Garland ( usa ) and Mestny (Ecuador), as well as the domestic one - Tayezhnik. For several years, colleagues from the A.K. Chaika Federal Scientific Center for Far East Agrobiotechnology observed and studied the new line and in 2020 it was decided to jointly transfer it for state variety testing," Valentina Kardashina explained.

The Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (UrFARRC UB RAS) unites 6 research organizations of the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions. Over the years, the center's scientists have created and included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation more than 300 varieties of grain, fodder, fruit, berry, ornamental crops and potatoes, which are grown in different regions of RUSSIA on a total area of more than 2 million hectares. In the field of veterinary science and animal husbandry, serious work is being carried out on the epizootic welfare of farm animals and genomic selection and genotyping of cattle.
