New varieties were bred by scientists of the Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (UrFANITs Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Yekaterinburg) and, according to the State Variety Commission, are recommended for cultivation in the Perm Territory, Sverdlovsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Kirov regions, as well as the republics: Chuvashia , Udmurtia and Mari-El.
New pear varieties - Chusovaya, Rozovy Bochonok, Sultan - have been added to the collection of Ural varieties in the state register of breeding achievements of the Russian Federation in 2023. They have excellent taste and quality characteristics, and are resistant to diseases and pests such as fruit rot and pear gall mite.
“Work on developing new pear varieties began back in the 70s, when L.A. Kotov began the hybridization of this culture in the Urals. Selection work is a very long process, but productive and promising. This work made it possible to obtain three excellent varieties with high taste characteristics, and the Sultan variety is also unique in that it became the first Ural winter pear variety,” said Dmitry Telezhinsky, one of the authors of new pear varieties, senior researcher at the Sverdlovsk Horticulture Breeding Station UrFANITs UrO RAS.
The Chusovaya pear variety is distinguished by its winter hardiness and lack of astringency in taste. And thanks to the crispy pulp, its fruits produce excellent sweet juice using household juicers. The tall tree with a wide pyramidal crown has fruits weighing an average of 80 grams, diamond-shaped, green or greenish-yellow with a possible pink blush. The fruits of Chusovaya ripen in late August - early September.
The Pink Barrel variety is drought-resistant and productive. The tree can withstand prolonged absence of moisture and produce a yield of up to 40 kg per tree. The tree is tall with a narrow pyramidal crown, so it takes up little space on the site. It has large fruits of greenish-yellow or yellow color with an average weight of 180 grams with yellow juicy coarse-grained pulp with a pleasant sweet and sour taste. The Pink Barrel variety ripens in the second ten days of September and, in refrigeration conditions, the fruits can be stored until the New Year.
Sultan pear has large, beautiful round-shaped fruits of light yellow color with a bright pink blush. This is the first Ural pear variety of winter ripening - the fruits are harvested at the end of September, and they can be stored until the end of January. Their average weight is 180 grams. The pulp is creamy, fine-grained, juicy, sweet and sour taste. The tree is tall with a wide pyramidal crown shape.
Pear varieties - Chusovaya, Pink Barrel, Sultan - can be purchased at the Sverdlovsk Horticulture Breeding Station at Ekaterinburg, st. Shcherbakova, 147.
