Washington and Seoul plan to start regular joint air force exercises as early as next week, Yonhap news agency reported, citing informed sources.
“The air forces of the two countries are planning to start a two-week exercise on the same scale as the previous exercises,” one of them told the agency.
Yonhap's interlocutors clarified that the decision was made due to the growing nuclear threat from North Korea. Since the beginning of the year, the South Korean authorities have repeatedly reported the launch of ballistic projectiles by the DPRK. In particular, in mid-March, Washington and Seoul announced that North Korea had tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile. The fact of the launches was officially confirmed in Pyongyang: at the end of January, the North Korean authorities announced the launch of the Hwasong-12 medium-range ballistic missile. The last launches, according to SOUTH KOREA, the DPRK held in mid-April.

U.S. and South Korean forces will begin joint maneuvers on May 9, the day before the inauguration of South Korean President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol, the sources said. The sources did not provide other details about the exercises, including details about the aircraft participating in them.
The exercise is an abbreviated version of other, larger Max Thunder maneuvers that both countries have previously conducted, the agency writes. They attracted a large number of aircraft and military personnel.
At the same time, the US and South Korean navies (SHAREM) anti-submarine exercises will be held in the East Sea, the maneuvers will last three days, Yonhap writes, citing officials. The destroyer USS Sampson equipped with guided missiles will take part in them. The ship arrived in the area last week.
