Siberia was considered safe from the point of view of African swine fever region, according to the National Union of Agricultural Insurers (NUA). The outbreak of ASF occurred here for the first time in 2017 and after that they were rare and spotty, for example, once in 2020 and 2022. However, according to the Center for Veterinary Medicine, in March 2023, three settlements in the Krasnoyarsk Territory were already quarantined for African swine fever. Subsequently, a burial of ASF-infected pigs was discovered in the neighboring Republic of Khakassia.
In Siberia, a very high level of livestock insurance is recorded at pig breeding enterprises, the NSA notes. In general, coverage in the region is 75%, in some regions it reaches 80% of the total number of pigs.
According to the NSA, in 2022 Siberian pig breeders insured almost 1.5 million heads of these animals under state support. Agricultural insurers note that with the expansion of the geography of the African swine fever virus, they expect an increase in demand for insurance in this industry. Recall that in the event of an outbreak of ASF, an enterprise or personal subsidiary farm may lose the entire population of pigs - they must be destroyed in order to stop the spread of the disease, since there are no methods for treating ASF yet.
