The ROSSELKHOZNADZOR imposed a ban on the import of cattle (cattle) and products from it into RUSSIA from the UK, on October 19, the press service of the department reports.

It is explained that the Rosselkhoznadzor took this measure because of “an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the English county of Somerset.” The fact of infection detection is confirmed by the World Organization for Animal HEALTH (OIE).

In addition, no information was received from the UK Veterinary Service on the identification of the source and the measures taken to block the spread of a dangerous disease.

The prohibitive measure was introduced against the background of the work carried out by the Rosselkhoznadzor to obtain Russia an important OIE status for foreign trade - a “country with controlled risk”. It is noted that there is no bovine spongiform encephalopathy in the Russian Federation.

Recall that bovine spongiform encephalopathy, otherwise called "mad cow disease" is a disease of adult animals with a long incubation period of up to 8 years. The disease affects the central NERVOUS SYSTEM of animals and has a 100% lethality.

Human consumption of products from the slaughter of diseased animals can cause the development of a fatal disease of the central nervous system. Especially dangerous in the use of the brain and spinal cord of animals with spongiform encephalopathy.
