Local production of lamb is planned to be developed in the republic on the basis of the Yakut Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture.
The Prime Minister of the region Andrey Tarasenko announced this in his TELEGRAM channel.
“We went to the experimental production base of YANIISH. A special breed of sheep is bred here, capable of enduring the Yakut frosts. So far, at a slow pace, but we will continue this direction, especially since there is demand. This would allow us to develop local lamb production,” he wrote.
At the institute, they began to crossbreed domestic sheep and bighorn sheep several years ago. Animals may be kept in semi-free conditions without accommodation. In total, there are about 80 heads, 24 of which are hybrid.
According to Leonid Vladimirov, DIRECTOR of YANIISH, in the 1930s, sheep breeding in Yakutia was so developed that the number of livestock in one farm reached 200. Now there are at least 1,500 livestock in the entire republic.
