In Kabardino-Balkaria, industrial blueberry plantations cover over 170 hectares, excluding private farms where blueberries are actively cultivated. Blueberry bushes can be found in garden plots in virtually every district of the republic, as Kabardino-Balkaria's climate is ideal for this berry .
However, growing blueberries is labor-intensive and expensive. Garden blueberries are considered a northern berry, and in southern latitudes, proper care is essential for the plants, particularly acidifying the soil; otherwise, a harvest is unlikely.
Blueberries harvested in Kabardino-Balkaria are now available not only in stores within the republic but also far beyond the region's borders.
Given that gardeners plant varieties with different ripening periods, the blueberry harvest will last until August.
Besides blueberries, raspberries, currants, and gooseberries are currently being harvested.
In 2023, farms across all categories in Kabardino-Balkaria harvested 6,500 tons of various berries. In terms of gross berry harvest in 2023, Kabardino-Balkaria ranked second among the regions of the North Caucasus Federal District. Kabardino-Balkaria accounts for almost 30% of the gross berry harvest in the North Caucasus Federal District as a whole.
