Trust in the United States and President Donald Trump will depend on how Washington reacts to possible violations of agreements by Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said at a press conference after a meeting of leaders of the Coalition of the Willing countries dedicated to supporting Kyiv.
"If the Russians violate any agreements and America responds effectively to this, then we all trust America and trust the president," he said ( quoted by Interfax-Ukraine). If, in the event of violations, there is no reaction, but on the contrary, the easing of sanctions is discussed, "then the question here is not about trust, the question here is something completely different: what to do with all this next?" Zelensky said.
Shortly before this, at the Coalition summit, the Ukrainian leader said that lifting sanctions on Russia now "would be a disaster for diplomacy." In his opinion, restrictive measures are "one of the few real tools the world has to persuade Russia to serious negotiations" (quote from the Ukrainian president's website). At the same time, Zelensky said that he considered Russia's conditions for a ceasefire in the Black Sea unrealistic.
The Kremlin reported that following talks in Riyadh on March 24, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on the implementation of the "Black Sea initiative," which includes ensuring the safety of shipping, after the lifting of a number of sanctions, including against Rosselkhozbank and "other financial organizations involved in ensuring operations on international trade in food and fertilizers." This concerns not only US sanctions, but also EU sanctions , the State Department clarified. The White House, for its part, stated that the United States agreed with representatives of Russia and Ukraine to exclude the use of force and not allow the use of commercial vessels for military purposes in the Black Sea.
At the Coalition of the Willing summit, all participating countries agreed that the time had not yet come to lift sanctions against Russia, “whatever they may be,” said French President Emmanuel Macron . According to acting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, “there is no point in lifting sanctions until peace is achieved.” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called this position one of the main outcomes of the meeting. Moscow considers Western sanctions illegal.
