Chinese consumers are more concerned about production date, expiration date and storage conditions on dairy product labels than other information such as nutrition, ingredients, certification, origin and manufacturer.
This data was collected through a survey conducted from December 2019 to March 2020, in which 4,408 people filled out a questionnaire. They were recruited from 10 districts of the country.
The questionnaire collected data on consumer demographics and concerns regarding various parts of a food label, including production date, expiration date, storage conditions, manufacturing process details, nutritional information, product ingredient list, certification mark, origin, and manufacturer.
This study, funded by the Chinese Ministry of Education , was published in the International Journal of Food Science.
“The analysis showed that there is little information on the labels of dairy products, especially in CHINA. To fill this gap, the study looks at factors that influence Chinese consumer identification and attention to information on dairy product labels,” the researchers write.
Based on the results of this study, recommendations will be provided to the government for the effective dissemination of knowledge about dairy products among the population.
As consumers are more concerned about the production date and expiration date, as well as the storage conditions of dairy products, this suggests that food safety remains a top priority.
China is not new to food safety incidents. Such incidents have happened. These are the cases of poor-quality Fuyang MILK powder in 2004, Sanlu milk powder in 2008, Fonterra's "botox bacillus" in 2013, and "high calcium milk" in 2015, which led to a loss of consumer confidence in quality and safety. dairy products.
Because of these incidents, people have started to pay more attention to the safety of dairy products.
Dairy label information in China is highly standardized to change consumer confidence in quality-assured dairy products.
