In the EU, the number of farms has decreased by almost 40%

Farms can be classified according to activities that dominate farm income. Some farms receive income from a variety of activities (mixed farming), while others receive income mainly from either crop production or animal husbandry. A farm's specialization is defined as an activity that accounts for at least two-thirds of the farm's total standard productivity.

Although there were fewer farms of all types in the EU in 2020 than in 2005, the decline in some types of farms was much more acute than others. Thus, at the end of 2020, the number of mixed farms decreased by 2.6 million, livestock - by 1.6 million, and there were 0.9 million fewer farms producing crops.

Nearly three-fifths (58%) of all farms in 2020 were classified as specialized agricultural farms. Just over one-fifth (22%) of EU farms were specialized livestock farms, with specialized pig farms representing 2% of all farms (137,890 in 2020).

In 2020, just under one-fifth (19%) of all farms in the EU were mixed farms, meaning they produced multiple crops and/or livestock.
