The sanctions are being imposed due to "Russia's lack of serious interest in the peace process," the Finance Ministry clarified . More than 30 subsidiaries of Rosneft and Lukoil are also subject to restrictions.

The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is imposing additional sanctions due to "Russia's lack of serious interest in the peace process," the US Treasury Department press service reported.

"Today's sanctions are aimed at two of Russia's largest oil companies: Rosneft Oil Company (Rosneft) and Lukoil (Lukoil)," the statement said.

The department added that the US Treasury Department stands ready to take additional measures if necessary to "support President Trump's efforts to end" the conflict. The department also called on "allies to join" and "comply with these sanctions."

The Ministry of Finance clarified that the restrictions also apply to subsidiaries of Lukoil and Rosneft located in RUSSIA. "They are subject to sanctions for their activities or participation in the energy sector of the Russian Federation," the ministry clarified. The ministry's list includes 34 subsidiaries.

"As a result of today's action, all property and interests in property of the designated or blocked persons described above that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons are blocked and must be reported to OFAC," the statement said.

In addition, any legal entities that are owned, directly or indirectly, individually or jointly, by 50% or more by one or more blocked persons have been blocked.

“Except as otherwise provided in a general or special license issued by OFAC, or under exceptions, OFAC regulations apply,” the ministry clarifies.

Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US was planning to announce a significant increase in sanctions against Russia.

The United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Lukoil and Rosneft on October 15. The measures include asset freezes, as well as sanctions on trust services and transportation. The document states that these measures are related to "doing business in a sector of strategic importance to the Russian government, namely the energy sector." The companies were previously subject to sectoral sanctions.

Russia considers Western sanctions illegal. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that the Russian economy "operates under a huge number of restrictions," and therefore has already developed a "certain immunity" to them.
