PIONERPRODUKT.by continues to publish videos from the AgroExpedition "Agriculture of Kazakhstan". In this video, we will show how selection and breeding work is carried out in one of the flagship livestock enterprises of Kazakhstan.
In the fall, horse grading takes place on the territory of the center. The company's specialists and invited scientists take measurements, weigh horses, compare indicators with previous years, and carry out scheduled veterinary measures. And this time they also took hair follicles from the horse's tail to conduct a genetic analysis.
We also surprised a group of schoolchildren from Lepsinskaya Secondary School. Despite the fact that the school is sports, the children study horse breeding. The biology teacher says that it is important to instill in children a love of rural work. This fosters patriotism and naturally broadens horizons.
At the Alakol Asyl Zhylkysy enterprise, they believe that science and production should be together. This is a better way to solve problems: horses become larger, stronger and produce better offspring, and, accordingly, profit for the enterprise.
To conduct a genomic analysis, at least 50 hairs with bulbs are taken from the horse's tail. Part of the hair is cut off, and the bulbs are placed in a bag with information about the horse: sex, age, breed. In the laboratory, a DNA test is done and the purity of the breed is determined, as well as which genes are responsible for weight gain.
During the grading, horses are assessed according to six characteristics: how well it matches the breed, origin, weight, size, amount of milk in mares, quality of offspring and how well it adapts to different conditions. Grades are given on a ten-point scale, and then the horses are divided into classes: elite, first class, second class and below second class.
All horses at the enterprise are chipped, and the information from the chip is read with a special device and recorded in the documents.
Experts say that a horse can work up to 15-16 years. But old horses are removed from the herd. Culled horses are branded with a "K" (old) brand.
Pregnant horses are vaccinated against salmonella abortion in horses.

Grading is an important tool that allows you to:
- Find out how valuable a horse is for breeding.
- Predict what its offspring will be like.
- Monitor how indicators such as live weight change over time.
- Remove old and non-breeding horses from the herd.
- Improve the horse breed.
