In 2025 , molecular genetic testing of approximately 8,000 Yaroslavl and Holstein cattle was conducted as part of the program.
"Such studies allow us to accurately confirm the animals' origins, identify genetic risks , and determine the breeding value of the herd. As a result, we are creating a more productive, disease-resistant herd, improving milk quality and the competitiveness of Yaroslavl livestock farming," explained Mikhail Evraev, Governor of the Yaroslavl Region. "In 2026, we will allocate over 26.5 million rubles to the development of the genotyping program, 13.5 million of which will come from the federal budget. This represents significant support for our agricultural enterprises and breeding farms."
The work is being conducted as part of the federal project "Creating Conditions for the Development of Scientific Research in Breeding and Genetics" of the national project "Technological Support for Food Security."
"The development of genomic selection is not just a scientific experiment, but a strategic step aimed at strengthening food security for the entire country," noted Yevgeny Tikhonov, Minister of Agriculture and Consumer Market of the Yaroslavl Region. "Work in this area is a true asset for the regional agricultural sector. The history of the Yaroslavl breed, which spans over a century and a half, is carefully preserved and developed by 17 breeding farms."
Rules for co-financing the costs of developing genomic selection in livestock breeding were approved by the Russian Government in August 2025. According to these rules, a federal budget subsidy can cover up to 70% of the actual costs incurred by farms. Funds are provided based on an agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and regional authorities.
