Genomic selection in livestock farming in Stavropol: support and new prospects

Genomic selection is based on the use of genetic information to identify and select animals with the best traits. It can be used to predict the productivity of cows even before they are born, allowing farmers to optimize their herds and improve the quality of meat and milk.

In support of this technology, Stavropol Krai authorities are offering financial assistance for genomic evaluation. The regional Ministry of Agriculture has announced that it will partially reimburse the costs of this procedure from the budget. In 2025 , 7.5 million rubles were allocated for this purpose, allowing for genomic evaluation of 1,285 head of cattle. This underscores the willingness of local producers to invest in innovation.

The advantages of genomic selection include:

  1. Increased productivity.
  2. Increased resistance to diseases.
  3. Optimization of breeding work.
  4. Long-term economic benefit.

As genomic selection becomes more accessible, it is expected that more farmers in Stavropol will adopt this method, strengthening the competitiveness of local livestock production in federal and international markets. Modern approaches improve product quality and significantly contribute to the region's food security.
