EU ambassadors were unable to agree on February 15 a new package of sanctions against Russia because of the need for synthetic rubber. This is reported by Politico, citing sources.

The tenth package of sanctions was supposed to include a ban on the import of Russian-made synthetic rubber, follows from the documents received by the publication.

Politico notes that the production of synthetic rubber annually brings Russia billions of dollars in revenue. So, in 2021, it exported synthetic rubber for almost $2 billion, of which $700 million came from the EU.

Synthetic rubber is used in the automotive industry, including tires and clutches. Countries like Italy and Germany are skeptical about a synthetic rubber ban, while Poland is in favor of a ban.
