July 8, Mogilev.
Belarusian President ALEXANDER LUKASHENKO is focusing on the faster and more effective development of goat breeding in the country, given the demand for this industry. He made this statement during a visit to a goat breeding farm near Mogilev, BelTA reports.
The
HEAD of state posed specific questions to officials and specialists: is
the product in demand , what is the profitability, and how quickly can the herd be increased?
The president was informed that there is good demand for breeding goats not only in Belarus but also abroad. There have already been sales to
Uzbekistan , and there are orders from
RUSSIA. In
2024 , the farm sold 45 animals, and this year, 174. The average price is 1,500 Belarusian rubles. The farm's profitability is approximately 25%.
Breeding
work is underway in the country, but so far,
it is proceeding "neither sluggishly nor smoothly," as Alexander Lukashenko put it. He then demanded that progress be accelerated by developing goat breeding on large farms across the country. Moreover, there are two other enterprises in Belarus that also breed goats: a farm in the Dzerzhinsky district and the Scientific and Practical Center for Animal Husbandry of the National Academy of Sciences.
"Why not do this? Demand is growing, including in Russia. Why not intensify the process?" the President emphasized. "This is a good undertaking, promising, and there is demand."
Alexander Lukashenko inquired in detail about whether additional conditions should be created at the breeding enterprise to rapidly increase the herd. According to experts, everything necessary is essentially in place, but one possible measure they proposed is purchasing additional goats for further breeding.
By mid-2026, the head of state instructed, the figures should double, and their growth rate should remain at the same intense pace. "There must be a doubling as long as there is demand. And going around begging for
money ... Here it is, cash," the President said.
"We need to push ourselves to the limit. If there's an opportunity to make money, we need to do so and capture the market," demands the Belarusian leader. Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that this applies not only to goat farming but to other areas of agriculture as well. "We're cavalier about agriculture—we're basking in the fact that we have everything we need and sell [for
EXPORT – BELTA] for almost $7 billion. But there's no progress. It's like this," he said. "Things won't go on like this, where we're working half-heartedly."
During the visit to the breeding farm, the personnel issue was also raised. The Mogilev State Breeding Enterprise currently lacks a general
DIRECTOR, after the previous director transferred to the post of chairman of the Gorki District Executive Committee. The President ordered that a decision be made on this matter promptly.
Alexander Lukashenko tasted goat
MILK and
cheeses made from it. "Perfect milk," the head of state praised it. The president recounted how Vladimir Putin once treated him to goat milk, and it had absolutely no distinctive smell or taste, just like the one he tasted now.
The cheeses currently produced in Belarus contain a combination of goat and cow milk. The head of state was assured of a market and good profitability. The products are already sold in Russia.
Alexander Lukashenko praised the taste and spoke about the
HEALTH benefits of goat products. "Excellent milk. And it's very important for children," he said. "
Nutrition is primarily a psychological matter. If you don't know it's healthy, then it will take a long time to get used to it. You have to persuade people. You have to get into their heads with this cheese and convince them it's very healthy."
Goat products, which possess unique nutritional qualities, were also on display for tasting. In light of the planned growth in goat milk production, domestic companies are developing various new formulas and product options.
Work began on establishing a breeding farm in 2021. For this purpose, 350 female and 20 male Saanen and Alpine goats were imported to
Belarus . Work is underway to create domestic breeding herds with high genetic potential, which will facilitate import substitution of goat breeding products and the export of new breeding products. Work is also underway to establish an artificial insemination station.
The total goat population in Belarus, across all farm types, is 48,000 head. Of these, 93% are kept on household farms, another 2% on peasant farms, and the remaining 5% on agricultural enterprises.
