South Korea has set a quota of 50,000 tons for duty-free imports of pork in order to stabilize supply volumes and prices for meat in the domestic market.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea, this month, all enterprises that have permission to export pig products to the South Korean market will be given a quota of 50,000 tons for duty-free import.

This measure provides an important advantage to large suppliers such as the US , Brazil and Spain.

In the first quarter of 2022 (January-April), South Korea imported 2,600 tons of Brazilian pork, an 85% increase over the same period last year.

Currently, only enterprises located in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, which until recently was the only territory with the status of a FMD-free zone without vaccination, are allowed to ship pork to South Korea. It is expected that after the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) granted the same status to two more states in southern Brazil (Parana and Rio Grande do Sul), South Korea will issue new permits and be able to expand the range of Brazilian meat supply enterprises. products for the South Korean market.
