Pig futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) traded higher on Thursday. US markets , including CME, were closed on Good Friday.

Pig futures closed mostly higher as brokers expected a seasonal increase in consumer demand for expensive cuts of MEAT, according to REUTERS. June lean hogs on the CME rose 0.875 cents to 118.475 cents a pound.

Wholesale pork prices in the US have strengthened. The US Department of Agriculture reported that the cost of pork carcasses on Thursday afternoon was $108.90 per centner, up 37 cents from Wednesday.

“Typically, demand for red meat picks up after Easter due to warmer weather and holidays. People are looking forward to the start of the grilling season and the increase in domestic demand for red meat,” said Dan Norcini, independent livestock trader.

He noted that the Mother and Remembrance Day holidays in May typically kick off the grilling season in the US.

The USDA said U.S. pork EXPORT sales for the week ended April 7 were 24,000 tons, down 26% from the previous four weeks' average. Mexico and Japan were the biggest buyers, with CHINA ordering 4,000 tons.
