USA: Week 11 Pig Market Review 2021

As of March 19, 2021, the USDA reports that the average cost of pork products in the US market has fallen by $3.81. Over the past week, a sharp drop in prices for a picnic ($8.98), ham ($8.32) and bacon ($8.03).

The United States sold 59,600 tons of pork overseas last week. Of these, 28,200 tons were exported to CHINA . Both deliveries were the highest since last September. This is a rather positive sign, as supply levels for slaughter pigs in the United States domestic market continue to decline amid persistently strong EXPORT demand.

The price of culled sows in the US market is in the range of ₵70 cents/lb ($1.54 US/kg). Last summer, sows cost around 20₵c/lb (44₵c/kg). Huge jump in value. An increase of $200 US/head. A good time to sell your sows that have been in the production system for too long (because you had to leave them) and replace them with replacement gilts. Now sows are more expensive than gilts, therefore, there is a real opportunity to replenish the breeding stock with replacement young.
