Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) group futures edged higher on Friday as traders covered short positions after prices fell 5.6% in the past two sessions, though demand concerns are holding back gains, Reuters reported.

The most active August livestock futures fell 0.5 cents to 133.375 cents a pound. In October, livestock prices fell 0.25 cents to 139.75 cents. Both contracts found support near Thursday's lows.

The CME August fattening contract fell 2.35 cents to 172.5 cents a pound in August. The contract hit a weekly low.

After the close, the USDA reported that fattening cattle as of June 1 was 1% higher year-over-year, with May sales up 2% from May 2021. The monthly report also showed placements fell 2% in May to 98% of the total registered a year ago.

Analysts had expected the report to show that fattening cattle as of June 1 stood at 101.4% of last year's total. Cattle placement in May was projected at 99.6% of the May 2021 total and sales at 103%.

Total red meat inventories in cold stores were nearly 1.1 billion pounds in May, up 20% from a year ago. The increase in red meat stocks was associated with higher levels of both beef and pork stocks. Beef inventories were 519.8 million pounds in May, up 25% from 2021. Inventories of boneless beef rose 22% to 471.1 million pounds, while stocks of beef tenderloin rose 54% to 48.8 million pounds. Generally, beef stocks drop in the summer months to below 450 million pounds as demand picks up during barbecue season. Inventories have topped 500 million pounds each month this year, which is a counter-seasonal move and could indicate that a higher beef price may be limiting consumer buying.
