MINSK . There is a new addition to the exotic family at the Grodno Zoo - a baby was born to collared peccaries. The zoo shared the good news with subscribers of its
TELEGRAM channel. The event took place several weeks ago, but only recently the caring
parents decided to show off their treasure to visitors, BELTA reports.
This is not the first addition to families this year. In March, the yaks Dymka and Zheya had a son, who was named Cadet. Moreover, cubs are usually born in late May-early June. Such an early birth is very rare. And at the end of January, triplets were born to one of the Cameroonian goats. Other “hoofed mothers” were also pleased with the news.
Collared peccaries are found in some
US states (New Mexico, Texas and Arizona), Mexico, Central America and much of South America. They live in small herds, numbering from 5 to 20 individuals, with a certain hierarchy.
Collared peccaries are herbivores. Pregnancy lasts 140-150 days. From 1 to 3, very rarely 4 cubs are born. Before giving birth, the female moves away from the herd, otherwise the newborns may be eaten by the rest of the peccaries. On the second day, the female returns to the herd. The young are fed on mother's
MILK for up to 3 months.
