He made this statement at a meeting on specific issues of socio-economic development in the Vitebsk Region, BelTA reports."Why am I talking about the death toll? It's morally despicable that we can't protect our smaller brothers, especially in this difficult weather. How can we fail to protect a kitten, a piglet, a calf, a little dog?!" the head of state said.

Alexander Lukashenko recalled that even in earlier times, without modern resources, people fought for the lives of animals, saving them from the cold. They even went so far as to bring newborn piglets home to warm them up and save them. "They understood that this wasn't just their future life— milk , meat . But they understood that this was morally unacceptable. And what's happening here?" the President noted.
The head of state emphasized that without cows and calves, there will be no meat or milk. "You must remember what happened in the 1990s. Therefore, this cannot be allowed to happen," he said.

Nevertheless, Alexander Lukashenko stated, the calf mortality problem remains unresolved. And it's not unique to the Vitebsk region.
"We need to start with the calves. We've realized that no amount of plastic shelters, especially in these freezing temperatures—minus 25-30 degrees Celsius in the Vitebsk region, covered in snow and ice, will save the calves. They're a coffin for calves. It's a shame the Minister of Agriculture , who is a livestock specialist, didn't understand this. I tell him about this every day," the President said.
