The largest insurance coverage has been achieved in Russian pig breeding - 61% of the livestock is insured

Today, domestic pig breeding is a leader in the use of agricultural insurance tools. In this livestock sector, the greatest coverage of insurance protection has been achieved: more than 14.1 million heads of pigs, or about 61% of industrial livestock, are insured under contracts with state support.

In 2021, the number of animals provided with insurance protection increased by 21%. These indicators are a clear result of a systematic approach and effective and fruitful interaction between the NSA and the National Union of Pig Breeders. Next year, the unions will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the signing of the cooperation agreement, which became the basis of this joint work," President of the NAI Korney Bizhdov emphasized, commenting on the participation of the union of agricultural insurers in the annual General Meeting of the NSS on June 30.

"Agricultural insurers annually transfer hundreds of millions of rubles of insurance payments to pig breeders. The main risks are dangerous infectious diseases. As previously reported, the largest single payment in Russia to one farm in agricultural insurance is 539 million rubles. It was made to a pig farm, for the loss of livestock pigs due to an outbreak of African swine fever in the Pskov region in 2021. The epizootic was recorded in different regions. For example, farmers in the Kursk region received another 90 million rubles for the same reason,” said NSA President Korney Bizhdov.

The NSA works closely with the union of pig breeders on the methodology of risk insurance. At the meeting of the NSS, the reports highlighted the role of the NSA in joint legislative work to amend the Law of the Russian Federation "On Veterinary Medicine" to eliminate legal uncertainty about the procedure for compensating livestock farms for the cost of livestock seized by the state for quarantine measures.

Russian pig breeding is one of the flagships for the development of not only the domestic livestock sector, but also the entire agro-industrial complex of the country. As Yury Kovalev, General Director of the NSS, noted in his welcoming speech, from importer No. 1 in 2012, Russiafor 6 years has reached 100% self-sufficiency in pork meat. In 2019, the export of pork meat for the first time exceeded its import, this step was recognized by international experts of the world market as unprecedented. And already in 2020, Russia confidently entered the TOP-10 world pork exporters. The main strategic challenge for the pig industry for the next 10 years is to enter the TOP-5 world exporters. “Agricultural insurance, which protects the financial stability of one of the industry leaders, will continue to support domestic pig production in the implementation of ambitious development tasks,” said NSA President Korney Bizhdov.

According to Federal Law N 260-F3 "On State Support in the Sphere of Agricultural Insurance", in Russia, within the framework of a centralized system, state support is provided for insurance of livestock risks. Since January 1, 2016, a single all-Russian association has been operating in the agricultural insurance market with state support - the National Union of Agricultural Insurers. Only member insurance companies have the right to conclude insurance contracts with state support, insurance is carried out on the basis of uniform standard rules for each insurance program.
