According to the publication, if over the past two decades, prices in Spain have increased by an average of 54.4%, then directly food prices over the same period increased by 79.3%.
The increase in food prices was due to a number of factors, ranging from higher prices for energy resources needed for many technological processes, higher prices for fertilizers, higher fuel prices, and a decrease in the supply of certain types of raw materials on the international market. In addition, climatic changes have had a significant impact, which in recent months has led to extreme droughts and unprecedented floods in Europe.
According to the newspaper's forecast, the upward trend in prices will continue in the coming months. Thus, by the end of the year, the general inflationwill grow again and in December will be about 5%. The highest rates will be observed in relation to processed food.
In particular, prices for processed foods will increase by about 0.4% each month compared to the previous one. Thus, year-on-year inflation will continue to remain in double digits, for example, prices will be 10.3% higher in October than in October 2022.
Along with OLIVE OIL , SUGAR (44.2%), potatoes - by 38.8%, rice - by 22%, canned fruits - by 19.4%, confectionery - by 18.2% have risen most of all over the past year. Commodities have also risen in price significantly: MILK has risen in price by 17.6% over the past year, pork - by 15.8%,eggs - by 12.8%, fish - by 8.9% frozen and 2.8% fresh; fruits - by 11.6%, vegetables - by 7%.
At the end of June, it was reported that the Spanish cabinet had extended by six months a package of measures to combat inflation, including VAT cuts on basic foodstuffs.
At the end of July last year, inflation in the kingdom accelerated to 10.8%, which was the highest rate since 1984. According to INE, the main driver of price growth in Spain was electricity, which at that time had risen in price by 49.4%.
