In this video we will show how instrumental insemination of sheep takes place in the field, and we will also visit a well-equipped shepherd’s house, where we drove for two hours across the Kazakh steppe.

The Alakol-Agro company is undergoing breed transformation of sheep of the Kazakh fine-wool breed, through complex crossing with the use of rams producing foreign MEAT breeds. The goal of the program is to improve the meat quality of sheep. This transformation is carried out with the involvement of Kazakh scientists, artificial insemination.

Insemination is carried out on winter pastures, where sheep are located from approximately October 15 to May 15. Near the shepherd's house, a base was built, with a canopy to protect sheep from the wind, measuring 12 by 30 meters.

The working day of livestock specialists who inseminate sheep begins at 6 am. They identify sheep in heat using sampler rams wearing aprons. The identified sheep are selected for artificial insemination, and the rest are released to graze.

Sheep in heat are inseminated twice, in the morning and in the evening. This is due to the fact that ovulation in sheep lasts 12-24 hours, and you need to be sure that insemination will definitely occur. According to the general DIRECTOR of the Alakol-Agro company, Oken Shabdanbekovich Akhmetov, 97-98% of ewes are fertilized artificially after the second insemination. The rest are covered by the stud ram, already in the flock.

For the first time we see the insemination of sheep in a yurt, which is installed in the base, next to the shed. There is a potbelly stove installed in the yurt, which provides heat, so it is comfortable for specialists to work in the yurt, and accordingly it is comfortable for the sheep themselves.

Inside the yurt there is a machine in which the sheep's HEAD is secured for ease of insemination. The vaginal speculum is placed nearby in warm water. The livestock technician inserts a speculum into the vagina, finds the cervix, and then injects semen with a dispensing syringe. With diluted semen from one ram, up to 30 ewes can be inseminated.

Additional comments:
- Using the seed of a Texel breeding ram will increase the live weight, fat content and taste of meat from sheep in the first generation.
- Double insemination increases fertilization efficiency since ewes can ovulate at any time within 12-24 hours.
- Using a yurt for insemination allows you to carry out this procedure in any weather, as well as move the insemination point across locations.
- Using a special semen extender allows you to fertilize a larger number of sheep with one dose of semen.
