Thailand denied that pigs exported to Vietnam earlier this month were infected with African swine fever prior to shipment.
Thailand's comment comes after Vietnam said on Friday it would suspend imports of live pigs from Thailand from June 30 after it discovered a shipment of imported pigs was infected with the virus.
“The pigs were tested for this disease before EXPORT,” said Sorawit Tanito, DIRECTOR general of the Thai Animal Development Department.
He added that Thailand will suspend the export of live pigs from the farm and the company responsible for the shipment, which Vietnam has identified as infected, and is investigating the incident.
More stringent checks on live pigs at quarantine checkpoints will be required before export to Vietnam, Sorawit said.
“We will consider immediately stopping the export of live pigs to Vietnam if there are further problems,” he said.
