US asks WSPA to change definition of poultry

The problematic aspect of this interpretation is the assignment of the status of producers even to those owners of private farms who give away eggs from their birds to neighbors from other private farms or breed livestock in hunting reserves for subsequent release into the wild. American legislators note that such a formulation can contribute to serious losses for many poultry producers.

The fact is that people who breed poultry for personal purposes, as well as owners of commercial livestock (supplied for export ), lose profits due to diseases common to them, including bird flu. According to politicians, due to this, the damage to the owners of the affected livestock can amount to several million dollars. More than a year ago, the US Association for Animal Health (USAHA) drew attention to this. It also asked to differentiate these categories of bird owners, but then its appeal was not heard.

It should also be noted that the informal, common definition of poultry also causes some confusion. According to it, it refers to any individual that is raised in captivity. Although such an explanation will allow one to distinguish it from a wild bird, there is no difference between it and a zoo bird in this definition either. In addition, this contradicts the fact that some birds can be kept free-range.
